Did You Know?
Engine Tidbits

February 15, 2011

Did you Know?

The chain rail bolt on the right is from a 1964 engine and the bolt on the left is used on every engine thereafter. Notice the thread depth. Hmmm!

Did you Know?

There are at least 5 rocker arms used in the opposed 6 cylinder engine.

Did you Know?

All different shapes and constructions. Some shapes are for strength, some shapes are for weight, some shapes are for adjustable swivels and some shapes eliminate the adjustable swivel (elephant foot). Can you guess which year is which?

Did you Know?

The special heat treated rods from a 911S (early) had the "S" painted on them. This is the crank shaft from my '67 "S" that I'm absolutely the first person to split the case. The numbers on the rods and the order they are in have been documented and after rebuild and balance were reinstalled on the same miked and polished crankshaft.

Did you Know?

I bet you didn't know that the aluminum castings, i.e. valve covers, chain housings, and chain housing covers have casting dates in them except for the 1964 901/01 engine. These have the casting numbers but not the date stamp.

Did you Know?

The lower valve covers basically look the same, but they are different. The upper valve cover is from a '65 engine and the lower is from the '64 engine. Look close!

Did you Know?

Look close again. The '64 is on the right and it's actually lighter, but yielded when tightened. The cork gasket was the only gasket available then. When the gorilla mechanics would over-tighten the 6 fasteners that hold it on the cam tower, it would warp, thus creating massive oil leaks. They cast a thicker cover with bigger bosses around the 8mm studs, thus adding strength and creating less oil leaks. I said, "less oil leaks" because the gorillas could still over-tighten the cover, thus warping it and creating smaller leaks...but leaks nonetheless. It wasn't until 1968-'69 that they used 11 studs instead of 6.

Did you Know?

This is the edge of the '65 lower cover.

Did you Know?

You can notice a difference between this '64 lower valve cover. The stud in the cam tower on a '64 engine is shorter than a '65.

Did you Know?

Even the chain housing covers are different. On the outside there are just a few small changes between '64, '65 and later.

Did you Know?

Notice, there is no date cast into the cover. This is a '64.

Did you Know?

I bet you can't guess what year this is!

We'll do more of these, "Did you know?" tidbits later.
